the brief

World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature with their partners Sea Sense and Mwambao Coast Community Network approached Smart Codes with the problem ‘How to collect data on Blast Fishing activities on Tanzanian coast, from Tanga to the North to Mtwara in South’

the solution

Smart Codes designed, developed and operated a mobile handset-based blast-fishing monitoring system. The system is based on data and information gathered by designated recorders. The system consists of Android-compatible mobile-handset application with capability to report blasts on a daily basis, including timing and location parameters and a secure, centralized database for the above data, accessible online to an authorized Administrator.

The system has an automated analysis of data and presentation of data including: Map-based presentation of geographic distribution of blasts, Graphic presentation of blast frequency by (user selected) location and (user selected) time period, A restricted-access website with higher geographic resolution (i.e. village level) data outputs and an open-access website available to the public with more generalized data outputs.

Blast were reported on first month of the operation.
